If you’re dreaming of a wedding that feels like stepping into a storybook - think moody weather, bold florals, and a little bit of magic - you’re going to love Ash and Matt’s cozy, witchy wedding at the Bird and Bottle Inn in Cold Spring, NY. Photographing their intimate rainy day wedding was an absolute dream. Every detail - from the Ash’s hooded cape to Matt’s carved umbrella to the handmade reception centerpieces and decor - felt like it belonged in a fairytale. Rain or shine, these two radiated joy, love, and a deep connection that made my job as their wedding photographer so easy (and so fun!).
THE COUPLE
Ash and Matt are the kind of couple you instantly want to be friends with. They're warm, witty, and clearly so in sync - not just in love, but also in life. Both work in children’s media, and that playful creativity showed up in the most delightful ways throughout their day. They originally planned to tie the knot in a New York City bookstore back in 2021, but like so many others, the pandemic nudged them toward a different path.
They pivoted with heart, and wound up creating a wedding day that felt even more “them.” No wedding party, no pressure, just a meaningful celebration filled with color, laughter, and cozy rainy day romance.
THE VENUE
The Bird and Bottle Inn in Cold Spring, NY is a gem of a venue, with historic charm, pretty nooks, and the kind of eclectic decor that makes every corner feel like a hidden photo opportunity. It rained the entire day, but this only made everything feel more intimate, like we were all tucked away in our own little world.
And honestly? The rain was a gift. It added a softness and mood that perfectly matched Ash and Matt’s vibe. Their first look happened on the covered front porch of the inn, and it felt so incredibly tender - just the two of them, grinning at each other under shelter as the rain drummed on the roof above.
THE DETAILS
When the forecast called for rain, Ash and Matt felt a little down, so they treated themselves. Ash picked up a stunning red hooded cape (yes, it was as magical as it sounds), and Matt found a carved umbrella that looked like something from Victorian England. Together, they looked like they stepped out of a woodland fairytale.
Ash wore a flowing gown, a flower crown in vibrant tones, and the most incredible shoes - adorned with the evil eye. She even had matching evil eye nail art, which I thought was so clever. Matt wore a sharp black suit with a tweed vest and a burgundy tie; it was classic with just enough of an edge to match the mood.
Their florals were such a standout: bold pops of pink, orange, and yellow. The ceremony took place under a glowing tent, where guests cozied up to witness something truly special.
THE RECEPTION
Ash and Matt were the heartbeat of their reception. They weren’t just attending it; they were in it, start to finish. Laughing, hugging, dancing, and sharing quiet moments between the buzz.
Before the party really kicked off, we ventured out into the rain for some portraits. Umbrellas up, cape flowing, and the most joyful “we don’t care if we get wet” energy ever. We also took some time for indoor portraits after the first look - the Bird and Bottle Inn has this funky blend of colonial and pop art, and it made for the coolest backdrop.
There’s something so special about photographing couples who are each other’s biggest fans. Ash and Matt lift each other up constantly, and you could feel that in every part of the day. Their love is the kind that feels rooted - full of inside jokes, unwavering support, and the kind of warmth that makes everyone around them feel like part of the family.
Ash and Matt’s day was cozy, creative, and bursting with personality - the kind of wedding that doesn’t just follow a plan, but builds its own magic. I’m still pinching myself that I got to be there.
